What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture’s roots are in China and can be traced back at least 2,500 years. The general theory of acupuncture is based on the premise that there are patterns of energy flow (Qi) passing through the body and that these are essential for health. Disruptions of this flow are believed to be responsible for disease. Acupuncture may, it has been theorized, correct imbalances of flow at identifiable points close to the skin.

Very fine needles are inserted at specific points along the meridians just under the skin to stimulate, disperse and balance the flow or energy, relieve pain, and treat a variety of chronic, acute and degenerative conditions. These then help to stimulate specific points in the body which then, in turn, help to restore normal energetic balance.

What conditions do we help with?

There are many conditions that can be helped with acupuncture. The most common complaints are: -

  • Addiction
  • Anxiety & panic attacks
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Digestive disorders (e.g. Bloating)
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Constipation etc.
  • Facial Paralysis
  • Hay fever
  • Headaches & migraines
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Musclulo skeletal problems (such as back pain, neck pain, knee pain etc.)
  • Sinusitis
  • Skin conditions (such as Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis etc)
  • Stress
  • Tinnitus

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. The acupuncture needle is an extremely fine, disposable (one-use), sterile, approved medical device. A licensed acupuncturist has undergone years of training in its safe implementation.

Is it painful?

When administered by a skilled professional it should not hurt. The hair-thin needles are not to be compared with the thick hypodermic syringes used for shots. The insertion feels like a tug on a body hair. After the needle is inserted their may be a feeling of tingling, a sensation of something moving, a warm feeling, etc. Many find it an enjoyable experience.

How many treatments will I need?

Depending on the nature, severity and duration of the complaint, the course of treatment will vary. Most problems can be fixed quickly, while more chronic conditions may be relieved only with time and effort. The speed of progress with long-standing chronic issues is much determined by the patients willingness to live and eat well in conjunction with the treatment.

What does an acupuncture assessment and treatment involve?

All our Acupuncturists only use very thin disposable needles so treatment is almost entirely free of discomfort. A visit will involve:

A comprehensive case history which will include a detailed evaluation of your general health

Clinical evaluation

Explaining our findings and diagnosis to you and then having a discussion to decide an agreed treatment approach

Your concerns and welfare are, of course, paramount, so great care will be taken to ensure that the treatment experience is as pleasant as possible.
