"Osteopathy helps me with my pains. NO NEED FOR PILLS!", explained one of our numerous delighted patients. They put it better that we could! For interest, we've tried to explain it too (see which one is best!).
Osteopathy is an established and recognised medical speciality that concentrates on the diagnosis and treatment of pain and stiffness. Osteopaths specialise in complaints involving the body's muscles, tendons, joints, discs, nerves and ligaments and, in particular, how they relate to good body mechanics, function and posture.
A detailed knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the human musculo-skeletal system enables our osteopaths to identify faults which occur because of injury or mechanical stress and to treat not just the symptoms, but the underlying causes of the problem. This allows the body to repair itself and thereby enhance performance.
The practice of osteopathy includes skilled and specific soft tissue and joint manipulation and release techniques, which provide the osteopath with the ideal tools for effective treatment of any musculo-skeletal dysfunction and a system of diagnosis which combines orthodox medical diagnostic procedures with a highly developed sense of touch (or 'palpation'). This is the basis on which our osteopaths are able to recognise the signs and patterns of poor function in an integrated and holistic approach to the human body.

Legal Stuff! The term osteopath became legally protected in 1993 and only those who have met strict guidelines and standards can become registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and call themselves Osteopaths. All our osteopaths are GOsC registered.
GOsC registered osteopaths have completed at least a four-year full time course at a recognised college of osteopathy, completing over 2000 hours of clinic based experience and developing expertise in musculo-skeletal medicine based on osteopathic principles. They are also committed to a minimum of 30 hours of professional development annually in order to ensure their skills and knowledge are up-to-date.

Osteopathy is particularly suited to assist those who require: • The treatment of complex and/or recurrent injuries: The ability of the osteopath to treat complaints as varied as back pain, head pain, hip problems and recurrent muscle injuries is a result of the osteopath's unique approach to appraising each injury, as well as the wide range of techniques and treatment approaches employed. • Injury prevention: The skill of our osteopaths in assessing the functional relationship between the many different tissues that combine to determine your body's structure (muscle, ligament, fascia etc.) also enables them to recognise patterns that are potentially developing into sites of stress, strain and/or injury. This means they can provide you with advice and treatment that should prove extremely valuable in helping you recognise possible injuries before you are aware of them. Together with your osteopath you can then help prevent such injuries from occurring. • Reduction in the severity and incidence of injuries: An extension of 'injury prevention' is that the benefits accrued from osteopathic treatment include a better functioning body which is more capable of combating and 'dealing with' injuries and mechanical disruption. A lifestyle enhancement, the osteopathic approach also helps the body's various parts to function as they should with particular consideration of your individual needs, thus the 'whole' body functions better and there's greater potential for improved performance. This is naturally of particular relevance to those involved in sport. • Provision of care and well-being through the 'holistic approach': Many of our patients find that the osteopathic emphasis on treating each person as an individual has enabled them to receive a service that goes beyond just 'getting better' and results in them feeling even better, after treatment, than they had before the injury! A typical example is a patient who visited with low back pain and, after treatment, noticed that reversing her car had become much easier - because, unknown to her, her neck had started to stiffen up too! |
![]() Osteopaths are best known for backs, but did you know that we can help with most problems that relate to muscle, tendon, joint, disc, nerve and ligament damage? These include:
|
In addition to the above, we're fortunate to have osteopaths whose postgraduate experience and studies enable us to help YOU with: • Musculo-skeletal problems in pregnancy (e.g. PSD) • Childhood musculo-skeletal problems • Sports injuries. • ‘Whiplash’ syndromes • Work injuries and occupation related complaints |
![]() Osteopaths listen to their patients, and will help them to understand the nature and cause of their problems, and will work together with the patient to create an individual treatment programme to provide lasting relief from pain. When you visit the clinic for the first time a full case history will be taken and you will be given an examination. You will normally be required to remove some of your clothing and to perform a simple series of movements. Please be prepared for this and wear suitable underwear! The osteopath will then use a combination of tests and a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation, to determine what has gone wrong. The osteopath will then clearly explain their findings to the Patient. Usually, the patient will require a course of treatments. The frequency of visits and length of the treatment is usually determined by the presenting problem. Your individual requirements will be clearly explained to you before your permission is sought prior to treatment commencing. At Back2Life Clinic, we believe it is vital that the patient understands their problems, as this knowledge will then allow them to make informed choices as to their treatment and recovery. Treatment will vary from person to person however, osteopathic treatment will generally consist of:
1. Soft tissue manipulation: to alleviate tension or spasm of painful muscles
2. Gentle stretching and movements of joints: to enhance and maintain mobility range.
3. Manipulation/adjustments: used to “unlock, open up, or to get joints moving properly
4. Remedial exercises: exercises to be done by the patient to aid recovery.
5. Preventative advice: the patient is made aware of changes that may be necessary in their lifestyle in order to reduce the chances of their symptoms returning e.g. Modifications to their workstation, lifting or sitting or standing posture etc.
Treatments usually last up to half an hour, and normally between 2 and 6 sessions are required. The majority of patients decide that they would like to have periodic preventative treatments to avoid recurring problems and help contain any chronic issues they may have experienced.
